Family Fun Night Encourages Parent Involvement

Great things happen when school partners collaborate for a common purpose.

Nieman Elementary community partners came together on an initiative to help increase parent involvement in the school, especially with dads. They hosted a Design with Dads Family Fun Night where dads and moms came with their children to compete in a contest to build the tallest standing structure.

Matt Miller, pastor at New City Church, served as master of ceremonies. Principal Stan Anderson, along with Ms. Vickie Charlesworth, deputy city manager for Shawnee, and Ms. Amy Rainey from City of Shawnee Offices, served as judges and measured each structure. Michelle Ranney, manager at Shawnee Book and Toy, photographed the families. Prizes were awarded to the top engineers to include prizes donated by Mr. Bill Quinley and Mrs. Amy Quinley, in addition to refurbished bicycles from the City of Shawnee and New City Church. Families shared pizza delivered from Marco’s Pizza. More than 100 kids and their families participated in this fun event.
