After-school Progam Provides Tutoring and Career Studies
The community partners at Frances Willard have collaborated to provide an after-school program called Life Learning Center that targets 4th and 5th graders from the Kansas City, Kansas elementary school. Currently, 16 students from Frances Willard participate in the program three times a week. Three other schools (Banneker Elementary, Welborn Elementary and William A. White Elementary) also participate in the program totaling 26 students.
Students receive tutoring in reading and math and have the opportunity to learn about different careers through hands-on projects. In the first few months of the program, students have already learned about building a website, managing a bank account, healthy living, how to build a flashlight with recycled material, and so much more.
